New"eco-patch6" LAN Cable is Light-weight and Eco-friendly, and Supports High-speed Communications

TOKYO--September 30, 2010- Net Chart Japan Inc., a LAN network construction company and 100% owned subsidiary of Internet Initiative Japan, Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI, TSE1: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced to launch a light-weight, eco-friendly LAN cable called eco-patch6 with partner Fuji Electric Cable Company Limited, a manufacturer and seller of fire-resistant cables, communications cables, LAN cables, optical fiber cables, and devices and processed goods.

The new eco-patch6 has the same safety and eco-friendly design features of the eco-patch product released in August 2009, with the additional advantage of meeting the new Category 6 requirements. The new cable has the following features:

1.Category 6 standard cable

The Category 6 (*1) twisted-pair cable standard was used (with an insertion loss (*2) 1.7 times that of the TIA standard (*3), enabling the cable to carry higher-frequency transmissions than previous eco-patch cables. Speeds and other aspects of cable performance are the same as common cable.

2.PoE system compatible

Like the eco-patch, the eco-patch6 is compatible with PoE systems (IEEE802.3af), a feature not found in conventional narrow-gauge cables. PoE is a technology for supplying up to 15.4W of power over a LAN cable rated Category 5 or higher, and thus eco-patch6 cables can be used when installing IT equipment such as IP telephones, wireless LAN access points, and Web cameras, in locations where it is difficult to provide power.

3.Light-weight and easy to install

Compared to conventional Category 6 cables, the eco-patch6 is about 60% thinner, with a diameter of just 3.7 mm, making it easier to run in the confined space of equipment racks. This small size makes it easier to manage and organize, resulting in clean, well organized wiring. The amount of copper used in the cable is also half that of conventional cables, so they are very light and put less stress on connectors. 
The RJ-45 modular plug is designed to protect the fragile connector clip and reduce cable loss during installation.


Cable casings use fire-resistant polyolefin, so even in the event of a fire, they will not release poisonous dioxin or halogen gases. Casings have superior fireproofing characteristics that meet JIS C 3005:2000 (incline test)(*4) requirements.

5.Eco-friendly shape

Because the materials and weight have been reduced by half that of conventional cables, the environmental footprint of production, transportation, and use have been greatly reduced.

These cables will be on display at the IIJ booth at the CEATEC JAPAN 2010 show to be held in Makuhari Messe from Tuesday October 5 to Saturday October 9, 2010, and at the Fuji Electric Cable Co., Ltd. booth at the 14th Network Construction Materials Show to be held at the Sunshine City Culture Hall in Ikebukuro on Thursday October 14 and Friday October 15, 2010.

Net Chart and Fuji Electric Cable will continue to work to develop innovative products and solutions for the high-speed communications equipment of the IPv6 era.

(*1) One of the twisted pair cable standards, can be used for communications within the 250 Mhz range. It is the next highest classification after Category 5e.
