IIJ to Open Matsue Data Center Park and Introduce IIJ GIO Private HaaS
TOKYO-April 26, 2011-Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI, TSE1: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced the opening of and start of operations at the Matsue Data Center Park, Japan's first commercial data center with outside-air cooled container units. IIJ begin introducing new service "IIJ GIO Private HaaS (Hardware as a Service)" which uses the Matsue Data Center Park.
Matsue Data Center Park began operations in less than eight months since construction began on September 1, 2010. The construction period was drastically shortened by transporting IIJ's proprietary IZmo (*1) container units with the servers already kitted (*2) at the server factory. The IZmo outside-air cooled container units are buildings that do not fall under the Building Standards Act in accordance with the technical advice (Ordinance No. 4933), "Following the Building Standards Act with regard to container data centers" released by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism on March 25, 2011. This data center, which combines simple scaling out and low cost suited to the cloud service era, will be used as the facility of IIJ GIO Service. The optimum sized facility will be sequentially expanded to meet service demands.
Demands are growing to migrate IT equipment that consumes large amounts of electricity outside East Japan to contribute to the electricity-saving measures implemented in East Japan. The fastest to respond to these demands, IIJ will offer a Private HaaS per unit that includes IZmo units with the customer's IT equipment (servers, storage, etc.) installed, a network connection service, and other services.
The process from customer IT equipment procurement through IZmo server kitting will be conducted by NEC Corporation, Hewlett-Packard Japan, Ltd., Fujitsu Limited, and other corporations at the factory before the IZmo units are transported to Matsue Data Center Park. Hence, IIJ can provide large capacity IT equipment quickly, the customer does not need to install their servers, IT equipment packing is reduced, and transportation energy consumption is reduced.
IIJ will demonstrate the IZmo container unit at their booth at the Cloud Computing Expo to be held at Tokyo Big Sight, May 11-13, 2011.
IIJ will continue to promote green IT, and will proactively develop an energy-effective data center at ideal low costs for cloud environments.
