TOKYO-May 30, 2012-Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI, TSE1: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced the release of the IIJ GIO Component Service Database Add-on, which provides a high-performance database system over the high-quality, flexible IIJ GIO cloud service. IIJ will start selling this service from July 2012.

The IIJ GIO Component Service Database Add-on is a service that provides market-leading Oracle databases and MySQL databases as a cloud-based service. With this service, customers can easily build an optimized database environment with a rich array of options, including the latest security technology of Oracle databases, without purchasing any equipment.

Service Highlights

Monthly fees that include licensing

Until now, building an Oracle database system required customers to purchase a software license, but with the IIJ GIO Component Service Database Add-on, Japanese businesses can use Oracle databases in their many variations and options for a monthly fee that includes the license fee. IIJ is the first service provider in Japan to do so. For as little as JPY 130,000 a month, customers have access to a database environment that is monitored and operated by IIJ, thus avoiding the large initial investment and maintenance costs of the past. In addition, with a minimum contract term of one month, the service is very flexible in response to changes in the management environment.

Scalability

Existing systems can connect to the database service via a closed network or Internet VPN, making it possible to easily connect to the virtual servers of IIJ GIO. There are several product options to meet different needs, such as extra memory and multiple concurrent connections, as well as dynamically adding capacity for query workloads, and disk size can be expanded up to 500 GB in units of 50 GB. By using Oracle’s Enterprise Edition or several special options, it is easy to build a customized database system with unique characteristics, such as improved scalability or higher performance.

Tough and secure

Servers, disks, networks are fully redundant to ensure high availability. In addition, there is monitoring and failure response 24/7, and daily data backups. All the databases are segmented on a virtual network, so there is no possibility of data leaks to other users. Optional features on Oracle databases can be used to implement database monitoring, encryption of communications, and encryption of stored data to build a secure database environment.

IIJ is tackling the enterprise market and promoting the migration of corporate systems to the cloud, and we will continue to expand the line up of IIJ GIO services to facilitate a smooth transition to a cloud computing environment.
